The hip-hop world is buzzing after Kendrick Lamar made an unexpected appearance on Future and Metro Boomin’s new collaborative album “We Don’t Trust You” – and took the opportunity to unleash a torrent of disses squarely aimed at rap titans Drake and J. Cole.
On the track “Like That,” Lamar aggressively calls out Drake and Cole’s hit single “First Person Shooter” from last year, on which they debated who among the trio of themselves and Lamar is the “hardest MC.”
Kendrick wastes no time going for the jugular, spitting:
“Yeah, get up with me, f–k sneak dissin’/ ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches.”
But the Pulitzer winner’s lyrical onslaught was just getting started. He proceeds to dismantle the entire premise of a “Big 3” by dismissively rapping “Motherf–k the Big 3, n—a, it’s just big me.”
Kendrick Lamar’s bravado builds from there, as he implies his artistry will outlive that of Drake and Cole by declaring “N—a, Prince outlived Mike Jack'” – likening himself to Prince and them to Michael Jackson.
Continuing, Lamar seems to take a mocking shot at Drake’s recent album “For All The Dogs” by rapping “N—a, bum, ‘fore all your dogs gettin’ buried/ That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary.” The latter is a reference to the famous Stephen King horror novel.
The scorching verse unexpectedly reignites a rivalry that had been simmering since Drake and Cole’s brief taunts on “First Person Shooter” last fall. At the time, Cole bragged “We the big three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali,” while Drake dismissed Lamar entirely by rapping:
“Who the G.O.A.T.? Who you bitches really rooting for?/ Like a kid that act bad from January to November, n-gga, it’s just you and Cole.”
With his eviscerating verse on the new Future/Metro Boomin project, it’s clear Kendrick Lamar felt the need to emphatically answer that question and reestablish himself as the alpha among rap’s elite lyricists.
