USC quarterback Caleb Williams entered the 2023 season as the likely top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft following his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2022. Nothing about it has changed on the field. Williams must, however, actually declare for the NFL Draft for this to happen.
Williams’ father recently said that, depending on who has the top pick, he might decide not to declare for the draft and instead choose to return to USC. In particular, if the Arizona Cardinals are selected first overall, it has been suggested that he might not want to play for them. Williams declined to comment on this when questioned about his future in the NFL.
“We’ve got Stanford this week, and that’s what I’ll be worried about,” Caleb Williams replied. “The game is three days out and so it’s the main focus, the main goal, is to go out there against Stanford and not let my teammates down on Saturday.”
Williams made it apparent that he wanted to avoid discussing his future in the NFL and instead focus on this week’s game. He dismissed any additional inquiries about the NFL by saying that this year at USC, success is his first priority.
“So, that would be the answer to all of those questions towards the NFL,” Williams added. “I have 10 more games left here that I’m given, and then we’re working for the last three. So, that’ll be the answer for all of that, but next question.”
Caleb Williams’ reluctance to discuss the reports that he might not enter the NFL Draft makes sense. However, considering what his father claimed, those inquiries are more than justified.
Williams’ father claimed that he spoke with Lincoln Riley, who informed him that the quarterbacks’ selection positions play a role in how well or poorly they perform in the NFL. That also applies to Arizona-drafted Kyler Murray.
“He’s got two shots at the apple,” Carl Williams said. “So if there’s not a good situation, the truth is, he can come back to school.”
