The 96th Academy Awards are set to honor the best films of 2023 on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
The ceremony, which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time, will also be broadcast live on ABC and streamed on Hulu and ESPN+.
The 2024 Oscar nominations were revealed on January 23rd as promised, by actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid, who announced the contenders in 23 categories.
The most nominated film of the year is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a historical thriller about the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.
The film, which stars Cillian Murphy as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, received 13 nominations, including best picture, director, actor, supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), supporting actress (Emily Blunt), original screenplay, cinematography, film editing, production design, costume design, sound, visual effects, and original score.
Oppenheimer is getting closer to become Nolan’s most acclaimed and successful film to date, going over $950 million worldwide. The film is widely considered the frontrunner to win the coveted best picture prize, as well as several technical awards.
The second most nominated film of the year is Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, a dark comedy based on the novel by Alasdair Gray.
The film, which stars Emma Stone as a young woman who is brought back to life by a mad scientist after drowning, received 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture, director, actress, supporting actor (Mark Ruffalo), adapted screenplay, cinematography, film editing, production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, and original song.
Poor Things is Lanthimos’ first film since his Oscar-winning The Favourite in 2018 and marks his reunion with Stone, who won the best actress award for her role in that film. Poor Things is praised for its witty and satirical take on the Victorian era, as well as its stunning visuals and performances.
The third on the list of films with the largest 2024 Oscar nominations is Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, a crime drama based on the book by David Grann.
The film, which stars Robert De Niro as an FBI agent investigating a series of murders of Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma in the 1920s, received 10 nominations, including best picture, director, actor, supporting actress (Lily Gladstone), adapted screenplay, cinematography, film editing, production design, costume design, and sound.
Killers of the Flower Moon is Scorsese’s first film for Apple TV+, and his eleventh collaboration with De Niro. The film is hailed for its gripping and tragic story, as well as its authentic depiction of the historical period and the Osage culture.
