In a surprising move, even for the consistently unpredictable Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback renowned for his unconventional plays found himself in a three-point stance in the single-wing formation. This unexpected role served as a decoy for running back Jerick McKinnon’s touchdown pass.

“That was sweet,” said Mahomes, who guessed that he hadn’t lined up with his hand on the turf since running the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine before he was drafted seven years ago. “That play was awesome. That’s a hard team to score on in the red zone. One of the best.”

Mahomes showcased his versatility by passing for 305 yards and delivering two touchdown passes, aiding the defending Super Bowl champions in breaking a two-game losing streak. The 27-17 victory delighted Chiefs superfan Taylor Swift and her devoted followers in New England.

Despite the excitement, the Chiefs’ tight end, Travis Kelce, caught five passes for 28 yards but experienced a potential touchdown slipping through his hands. McKinnon contributed with both a rushing touchdown, while Rashee Rice hauled in nine passes for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s standout performance included a season-high 101 yards from scrimmage and a leaping catch in the back of the end zone for a Mahomes touchdown. The Chiefs (9-5) secured a two-game lead in the AFC West over the Broncos.

Facing the Patriots, quarterback Bailey Zappe, starting in place of benched Mac Jones, completed 23 of 31 passes for 180 yards. Despite their efforts, the Patriots (3-11) suffered their sixth loss in seven games, now just one game back in the race for the No. 1 overall draft pick.

Flexed out of “Monday Night Football” due to their struggles, the Patriots took a backseat to Swift and Kelce’s team. In what might be coach Bill Belichick’s penultimate home game, the six-time Super Bowl champions fell short, allowing 20 straight points after initially taking a 10-7 lead.

The game day atmosphere was infused with anticipation for Swift, with fans holding signs and lining up in hopes of catching a glimpse. Swift, on a break from her Eras Tour, was spotted on the scoreboard, playfully interacting with the crowd, wearing a Chiefs knit cap and sweatshirt.

The Chiefs improved to 5-2 with Swift in attendance, while the Patriots could only offer Jon Bon Jovi’s pre-game bell ringing. Notably, Harrison Butker and Chad Ryland both missed field goals early in the game.

Despite some setbacks, Mahomes showcased his skills, connecting with Edwards-Helaire and McKinnon for crucial plays. The Chiefs secured a 27-10 lead before the Patriots managed a late touchdown. The game concluded with the Patriots unable to make progress, turning the ball over on downs in their own territory.
