After suffering a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Pittsburgh’s 30-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Diontae Johnson’s season opener was cut short.
Johnson seemed to stumble after completing his best play of the day, a 26-yard reception. After a brief assessment in the injury tent, he needed assistance getting off and returned to the locker room. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Johnson gained 21.5 yards after the catch for the Steelers, who had a lackluster offensive performance against the 49ers, one of the NFL’s top defenses, and it was their longest play of the day.
Johnson finished the game with three catches for 48 yards off six targets.
As Johnson jumped for a high throw from Pickett in the first quarter, he stumbled on the field, and the ball was intercepted. In the first half, Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson and tight end Pat Freiermuth both slipped on the field. The playing surface didn’t seem to cause the 49ers any problems.
The Pittsburgh Panthers, who played Cincinnati on Saturday night, share a field with the Steelers.
The Steelers were also without Johnson in the second half as defender Cameron Heyward was ruled out with a groin ailment.
