In the Box Office, ‘The Fall Guy’, Starts Off With Disappointing $28M Debut

Despite ruling the box office, “The Fall Guy” had a rough go in its theatrical opening. The David Leitch-directed action comedy with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt opened to a disappointing $28 million.

Based on the 1980s TV series, the movie follows Colt Seavers (Gosling), a down-on-his-luck action choreographer who uncovers a dangerous mystery while shooting a blockbuster directed by his ex-girlfriend (Blunt). The love story between the two characters is at the heart of the film, which aims to marry heart and spectacle.

Leitch’s maximalist approach is apparent throughout. Explosions and neon-drenched fight scenes frame passionate embraces; pyrotechnics are set to Kiss’ arena rock anthem “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.” Despite naysayers, Leitch’s instincts paid off, crystallizing the film’s tone as camp and cool in equal measure.

It’s Gosling and Blunt’s chemistry that drives things forward. Even in quieter moments, their performances cannot be stopped. Though it fell short of initial tracking expectations with its $28 million opening weekend domestically, at its core remains an authentic love story that will not soon be forgotten.
