Indiana Star Mackenzie Holmes Injured; Exits Game with Knee Injury

Indiana Hoosiers star player Mackenzie Holmes suffered a left knee injury during Sunday’s game against the Maryland Terps, which Indiana eventually won 71-54. The injury occurred in the third quarter when Holmes went up for a layup and collided with a Maryland defender.

Holmes had to hop on one foot after realizing she was hurt but managed to walk off the floor by herself. She then went to the locker room for evaluation and later returned to sit on the bench, but she did not re-enter the game. This isn’t the first time Holmes has dealt with knee trouble, as she has faced injuries in the same knee in the past, including during the 2023 postseason.

In another setback for Indiana, sophomore Lilly Meister also left the game with an ankle injury.

Coach Teri Moren expressed concern for both players after the game and stated that they would be evaluated ahead of the Big Ten tournament, which begins on Friday. Moren emphasized the need to stay optimistic while awaiting further updates on the players’ conditions.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Holmes’s injury, Moren praised her resilience and toughness, expressing hope that she will recover swiftly. She acknowledged Holmes’s unfortunate streak of injuries, particularly during late February, but remained positive about her ability to bounce back.

The injuries to Holmes and Meister pose challenges for the Hoosiers as they prepare for the upcoming tournament. However, Moren emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the players who are available and remaining hopeful for the best possible outcome for Holmes and Meister.
