Larry David, the creator and star of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, says that he’s not lying about ending his show after season 12, which will be premiering this month, February.
David made the announcement in December 2023, when he released a statement saying that he was ready to retire from playing the “malignant character” that he portrays on the show. He also said that he wanted to:
“Shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be – the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character.”
The comedian also said that he’s 76 years old and that he doesn’t have any more ideas for the show, which follows his fictionalized misadventures in Hollywood.
However, many fans and critics were skeptical about his decision, as he had said the same thing before, only to come back with more seasons. He had previously taken long breaks between seasons, and had hinted at ending the show several times, such as after season 5 in 2007, season 8 in 2011, and season 10 in 2020.
Larry David addressed the doubts and questions about his retirement at the season 12 premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday, where he was joined by his co-stars and celebrity guests. He told reporters that he was serious about ending the show, and that he had no plans to change his mind.
“I’m not lying – I’m not a liar. OK, yeah, 15 years ago, I said it was the last season – that’s what I say when I don’t think I’m going to come up with another one. But, this is it.”
David also joked that he was looking forward to spending more time in his office, where he likes to “patchke around”, which is a Yiddish term for wasting time or fiddling with things.
“I don’t know, I’ll go into my office, I’ll patchke around, I’ll do nothing. That’s what I like to do, nothing. I have no other aspirations, no other goals, no other dreams. I just want to be left alone, and have some peace and quiet.”
‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is one of the most popular comedy series of all time, having won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award, among other accolades.
The show features Larry David as a fictionalized version of himself, who often gets into awkward and hilarious situations with his friends and family due to his blunt and neurotic personality. The show is known for its improvisational style, its use of the “cringe comedy” genre, and its catchphrase “pretty, pretty, pretty good”.
The 12th and final season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ will consist of 10 episodes, and will premiere on HBO on February 6th. It will also be streamed on HBO Max the next day.
