Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller and Governor Wes Moore of Maryland recently went to a number of Veterans Day functions. They paid tribute to the state’s military families and veterans. Governor Moore signed two executive orders while having breakfast at the Government House. A commission was established in the first to establish a Memorial for the Veterans of the Global War on Terrorism. The second was to lower the suicide rate among veterans.
Governor Moore was present at the Veterans Day Parade in Baltimore City. Major General Janeen L. Birckhead and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott were also present. The grand marshal of the procession was Birckhead, the adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard. The governor underlined the need of continuing to assist veterans and active military personnel.
Additionally, the governor attended the third annual Vehicles for Change vehicle show. This group donates cars and offers employment training. These assist recipients in gaining access to healthcare, education, and better jobs. The organization gifted ten veterans cars at the ceremony. Secretary Anthony Woods of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs and Secretary Portia Wu of the Maryland Department of Labor were also present.
The Holiday Meals for Military initiative included participation from the governor and lieutenant governor. Operation Homefront honored soldiers and military families with this event. It honored the 150 military families that call Maryland home. The venue for the event was Baltimore’s B&O Railroad Museum. Anthony Woods, Comptroller Brooke Lierman, and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen were also in attendance.
At the event, Governor Moore declared Maryland Joins Forces. The purpose of this program is to address problems that the military community faces. It will center on work, education, health and wellbeing, food and housing insecurity, and volunteer work. The project will be headed by the lieutenant governor. Lieutenant Governor Miller and Governor Moore both promised to assist veterans, active military personnel, and their families.
