Liverpool defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 on Saturday with two late goals, vaulting the Reds to the top of the Premier League (at least momentarily).
In the opening period at Molineux, the hosts outplayed an uncharacteristically sluggish and careless Liverpool team. Hwang Hee-chan scored following a fantastic run by Pedro Neto in the seventh minute, but Wolves wasted a number of other opportunities.
As a result of Mohamed Salah’s assist for fellow striker Cody Gakpo in the 55th minute, Liverpool leveled the score in the second half.
As the visitors pushed forward in the 85th minute, Andy Robertson, who was playing in his 200th Premier League game, slid in Liverpool’s second from another Salah assist.
Hugo Bueno of Wolves deflected a Harvey Elliott shot into his own goal as time expired to give Liverpool a three-goal advantage, sending the away supporters into a frenzy.
“I thought the second half performance was impressive and we got what we deserved,” said Robertson.
“We can come up with excuses for the first half, like the international break and people travelling, but we made mistakes which we are not used to making.”
Liverpool is currently in first place with 13 points after five games, one point ahead of Manchester City, who plays West Ham later on Saturday.
Wolves are in 15th place on three points.
