Baker Mayfield Shreds Buccaneers Defense

The Buccaneers’ day of training camp finally came to an end. After being named the team’s starting quarterback yesterday, Baker Mayfield destroyed the Buccaneers’ reserve defense today.

There was no major news that day, Ryan Jensen attended practice but hasn’t started practicing, Calijah Kancey was there in shorts but didn’t practice, and John Wolford was back and practiced without any restrictions.

Baker Mayfield and the first-team offense had a great day to start. He completed six passes for four touchdowns when they were in the installation stage. Baker looked fantastic, as did the offense.

Deven Thompkins caught two of the touchdown passes, and Mike Evans caught one.

The red zone 11-on-11 period followed. With the first team defense versus the second team offense, Trask got things going. Baker then faced the second-team defense while playing with the first-team offense.

Trask completed 4 of 6 passes in the end zone, with Kade Warner scoring once. He had one pass broken up by a defender and one throwaway at the back of the end zone to account for his two incomplete passes.

Although Baker was 2 of 5 in the red zone, that is hardly the complete picture. Payne Durhman, a rookie tight end, caught a touchdown pass from Mayfield.

Next, during the whole 11-on-11 time, Trask and Mayfield each received two drives.

In that span, Trask had a 9-14 record. His incomplete pass almost certainly would have resulted in a sack. Trask’s performance in this span was inconsistent; he had one solid run in which he went 4-5 with the lone incomplete pass being a drop. But he also missed an overthrow and a pass behind the defender, as well as making other imprecise incomplete passes.

In that time, Mayfield had an 8-12 record. However, two of those failures were drops. He completed many sentences for Godwin and Evans. He was 4-6 throughout a period of time when both of the decreases occurred. He made numerous throws across his body and downfield.

Overall, Baker and the first-team offense had a tremendous day. They are maintaining a rhythm and beginning to develop chemistry. Baker had a few throws that he ripped into a small window and was aggressive downfield. Excellent day from QB1.

Trask, on the other hand, has the makings of a solid backup but is still the underwhelming prospect we saw at the draft. He occasionally throws accurately, but he also went through a period where he underthrew, overthrew, and just missed his goal.
