Steelers Safety Damontae Kazee Suspended By NFL For Remainder Of Season Following Illegal Hit

The NFL has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee without pay for the rest of the season, citing “repeated violations” of player safety rules, as announced by NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan on Monday. This suspension encompasses Pittsburgh’s remaining three regular-season games and potential playoff matchups if the team advances.

Kazee was ejected during the Steelers’ 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday for a hit on Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. in the second quarter. The collision, involving contact with Pittman’s head as he attempted to catch a pass, led to Pittman entering the concussion protocol.

In a letter to Kazee, Runyan emphasized that the illegal contact with Pittman “could have been avoided” and pointed to Kazee’s consistent violations of safety rules as a significant factor in the decision to suspend him.

Having faced fines multiple times this season, Kazee, a seven-year veteran, will lose approximately $208,000 in game checks due to the suspension. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin refrained from speculating on potential discipline before the announcement, stating it wouldn’t be helpful for him, Kazee, or football itself.

With both starting safeties sidelined, including Minkah Fitzpatrick due to a knee injury, the Steelers face challenges heading into upcoming games. Kazee retains the option to appeal the decision to hearing officers Derrick Brooks or James Thrash, appointed by the NFL and NFLPA to handle appeals of on-field player discipline.
