Andrew Tate, the controversial influencer, has been detained in Romania after being served with a British arrest warrant related to allegations of sexual aggression. The case, which dates back to 2012-2015, has resurfaced, leaving Tate and his brother Tristan facing serious charges.
The Tate brothers were taken into custody on Monday evening, and the Bucharest Court of Appeal is set to decide on executing the warrants issued by the UK’s Westminster Magistrates Court. Despite the Crown Prosecution Service’s initial decision not to prosecute, four women who reported Andrew for alleged sexual violence and physical abuse have turned to crowdfunding to pursue a civil case against him.
The women’s campaign page details this, stating,
“We handed over our evidence about the horrific acts of violence we endured and waited for action. But four years later we were told the U.K. authorities would not prosecute him. It’s our one remaining route to hold him accountable.”
Andrew Tate’s spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, has expressed the brothers’ “profound disappointment” over the revival of these accusations without new substantial evidence.
Meanwhile, according to CBS News, the media influencer is also charged in a separate Romanian case with rape, human trafficking, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, allegations he and his brother, along with two Romanian women, have denied.
The legal proceedings in Romania are still in the preliminary stages, with no trial date set. The brothers were initially held in police detention for three months before being moved to house arrest and later restricted to the areas of Bucharest Municipality and nearby Ilfov County.
