Xander Schauffele Reveals Jordan Spieth Might Have Been ill Before His Disqualification

Xander Schauffele has revealed that his friend and rival Jordan Spieth was “really sick” and had to rush to the bathroom right after finishing his second round at the Genesis Invitational, which might have caused his scorecard error and disqualification.

Spieth was disqualified from the tournament on Friday after signing an incorrect scorecard. He had mistakenly written down a 3 instead of a 4 on the par-3 fourth hole, which resulted in a one-stroke penalty and a breach of Rule 3.3b(3), which states that a player must certify the accuracy of his scorecard before returning it to the committee.

Schauffele told the media after the game ended on Friday that Spieth was feeling unwell and needed to use the restroom urgently after completing his round.

I heard he (Spieth) had to go to the restroom and came back like a minute later and the card was wrong.” Schauffele also went onto say, “Maybe there needs to be some sort of softening on the rules, but for the most part we all kind of know what goes on in there. It’s really unfortunate it happened.”

Xander Schauffele, who is trying to acquire his eighth PGA Tour win, shot a 66 in the third round and moved to two strokes behind the leader Patrick Cantlay. He said he was happy with his game, but also felt sad for Spieth.

“I know Jordan, it’s really unfortunate. He’s a big pull for us, he’s a top-three pull for us on tour so it’s not good that he’s not here.”
