Wright-Patterson Celebrates Women’s History Month

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio is gearing up to celebrate Women’s History Month with a series of events happening throughout March. The 88th Air Base Wing’s Special Observance Committee has organized various activities, including a women’s health seminar, book club, museum tours, and scavenger hunts. This year’s theme, “Women Breaking Barriers, Building the Future,” honors the contributions of military and civilian women and highlights the importance of diversity in the U.S. forces.

The events aim to raise awareness about the challenges women have faced and continue to overcome. Staff Sgt. Vivian Thompson, a committee member, hopes these activities will inspire others to contribute to a brighter future.

The Women’s Health Panel, featuring speakers from the 88th Medical Group, will take place on March 8 at the Wright-Patterson Medical Center Auditorium. Additionally, there will be a book club discussion on March 29 at the USO Auditorium, focusing on “Code Name: Lise: The True Story of the Woman Who Became WWII’s Most Highly Decorated Spy” by Larry Loftis. The book highlights the accomplishments of Odette Sansom, an undercover agent in World War II.

The committee has partnered with the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to offer guided tours showcasing exhibits featuring women in the Air Force. Base employees can register for guided tours on select dates in March, while tours are open to the public every Saturday. The museum will also host a monthlong scavenger hunt, providing an educational experience for all ages to learn about women’s history.

These events aim to recognize the significant contributions of women in military and civil service and create opportunities for a brighter future. Staff Sgt. Vivian Thompson, who is part of the Women’s History Month Committee, expressed her excitement about engaging with various offices across the base, including Equal Opportunity and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility team.

For more information about the Women’s History Month Committee and its events, individuals can contact Staff Sgt. Vivian Thompson or Senior Airman Christley Mae Miranda via email.
