The third season of HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria is mired in uncertainty, with reports indicating lengthy delays and the possibility that the new season may be scrapped altogether.
Despite previous assertions from the network that season 3 would film in 2025, multiple outlets are now claiming that production has been indefinitely postponed. According to film publication World of Reel, actors have even been told “they could free up their schedules for other projects.”
While HBO maintains it remains “committed to making an exceptional third season” with creator Sam Levinson, the network confirmed to Variety that the start of production will be pushed back, allowing the in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.
This bombshell news arrives as the ensemble, led by Emmy winner Zendaya, has skyrocketed to Hollywood’s A-list in the two years since Euphoria’s smash second season. Major film roles for Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer now conflict with revisiting their angsty teen characters.
Euphoria’s path forward was already complicated by the July 2023 tragic passing of fan-favorite Angus Cloud, who played Fezco. The series would likely need to re-work storylines without his character.
There are also questions about how plausible it is for the 20-something actors to continue playing high schoolers, a reality Elordi has openly joked about. “They’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something,” he quipped.
Further muddying Euphoria’s future are the behind-the-scenes controversies that plagued Levinson’s recent HBO series The Idol, which flamed out spectacularly amid reports of a dysfunctional set.
While Levinson had teased season 3 would be a bold “film noir”-inspired exploration of morality through Zendaya’s Rue, that creative vision may now be scrapped if the delays persist.
