12 Suns Beat #5 Marquette 89-75 on Senior Day

Creighton’s basketball team, led by senior Baylor Scheierman, secured an impressive 89-75 victory against the fifth-ranked Marquette on Saturday, March 2nd. This win marked Creighton’s first time defeating multiple Top 5 teams in a single season in the team’s history.

Scheierman, along with fellow seniors Ryan Kalkbrenner, Francisco Farabello, and Steven Ashworth, played a significant role in Creighton’s success, contributing a total of 61 points out of the team’s 89. Additionally, Trey Alexander had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists, becoming the first Bluejay player since 2016 to achieve consecutive double-doubles in points and assists.

Throughout the game, Creighton displayed impressive offensive prowess, shooting 54.1% from the field and making 13 of 32 three-pointers. They also dominated in rebounding, bench points, and fast break points, outscoring Marquette in these areas.

Marquette, despite missing key players due to injury and illness, put up a strong fight, with Kam Jones scoring 23 points and David Joplin adding 21. However, they couldn’t match Creighton’s offensive firepower and shooting efficiency.

The game witnessed several lead changes early on, but Creighton took control midway through the first half and maintained their lead for the rest of the game. A pivotal moment came when Creighton went on a 16-6 run in the second half, extending their lead to double digits for the first time.

Although Marquette attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap to just one point, Creighton responded with a decisive push, led by their senior players. Scheierman, in particular, played a crucial role during this stretch, scoring several key baskets to secure the victory for Creighton.

As the game concluded, Creighton honored their seniors, who played their final home game of the season. The win not only solidified Creighton’s position in the BIG EAST Tournament but also highlighted their resilience and determination throughout the season.

Looking ahead, Creighton will face Villanova in their final regular-season game, aiming to build on their recent success and carry momentum into the postseason.

In addition to the game, Creighton celebrated its 1973-74 team during halftime and achieved several milestones, including multiple wins against Top 5 teams and securing a top-three seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. Individual players also achieved notable records and milestones, reflecting the team’s collective effort and success.

Overall, Creighton’s victory against Marquette showcased their offensive firepower, defensive resilience, and the contributions of their senior players, marking a memorable and historic moment in the team’s journey this season.
