Troy Aikman, the Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN commentator, faced some media backlash recently after an old tweet of his resurfaced following Patrick Mahomes’ third Super Bowl victory on Sunday.
Aikman had tweeted in 2019,
“Talk to me when when he has 33% of my Super Bowl titles” in response to an article that compared Mahomes’ career touchdowns to his.
Fast forward to 5 years later, Patrick Mahomes leads the Kansas City Chiefs to a 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, matching the former QB’s three titles at the age of 28.
He also became the fourth starting quarterback to win three Super Bowls, joining Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, and Aikman.
Some Chiefs supporters and NFL fans were quick to remind Troy Aikman of his past tweet and asked for his opinion now.
Aikman, however, did not directly address his old comment, but congratulated Mahomes and the Chiefs on their second consecutive championship.
“Congratulations to the Hunt family, Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization. What an amazing run they are on.”
The Chiefs are currently the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, according to betting site Bovada. Patrick Mahomes has also signed a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs that is worth up to $503 million, one of the biggest deals in sports history.
