Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Declares Snow Emergency, Closes Schools and City Buildings

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared a snow emergency and announced that schools and city buildings will be closed on Tuesday, February 13th, due to the forecasted nor’easter that is expected to bring up to 12 inches of snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding to the city and the region.

The Mayor said in a statement that,

“With the arrival of our first major snowstorm this winter, City teams are prepared to clear our roadways and respond to any emergencies during the storm. Please be aware of parking restrictions so that we can clear the roads as quickly as possible, and check on your neighbors, family, and friends to be sure everyone has a plan to stay inside and stay safe.”

The snow emergency and parking ban will take effect at 10 p.m. on Monday, February 12th, and will remain in place until further notice.

Vehicles parked on posted snow emergency arteries will be towed to allow for snow-clearing operations. Residents with a resident parking sticker can park for free or at a discounted rate at participating garages. Space savers are allowed for up to 48 hours after the end of the snow emergency, except in the South End and Bay Village, where they are banned.

Boston Public Schools and all municipal buildings, including Boston City Hall, Boston Public Library branches, and BCYF community centers, will be closed on Tuesday. All COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites will also be closed, and residents are also urged to reschedule their appointments.

Trash and recycling collection will start two hours early on Tuesday, at 4 a.m., and residents are asked to clear snow from their sidewalks and fire hydrants within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours of sunrise if it snows overnight.
