New York Giants Acquires Boogie Basham, Cut Oshane Ximines

Boogie Basham, a defensive end, was traded by the Buffalo Bills to the New York Giants on Tuesday.

Additionally, in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick, the Giants received a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Bills.

As they complete their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, the Giants have activated wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson from the physically unable-to-perform list. The right knee of the draft pick from the second round was torn last November. His two-week practice period to be ready for the season has officially begun.

The Giants released wide receivers Cole Beasley and Jamison Crowder on Tuesday in order to make room for the new additions to the roster. They also released 2019 third-round selection Oshane Ximines, who had 6.5 career sacks with the team.

Out of Wake Forest, Basham was selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Joe Schoen, the current general manager of the Giants, was a member of the Buffalo front office at the time of the selection. The Bills’ offensive coordinator at the time, Brian Daboll, took a close look at Basham during workouts. Daboll is now the head coach of the Giants.

In his two seasons with Buffalo, Basham, 25, has recorded 20 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. He gives the Giants’ outside linebacker corps, which was lacking depth behind starters Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari, more depth.

Last week, the New York Giants acquired Isaiah Simmons in a trade. While early in his career, Simmons was occasionally employed as an outside linebacker, he will be spending the majority of his time with the Giants’ inside linebackers group.

The Bills have traded a second-round pick who is still under contract as a rookie right before the start of the season for the second year in a row as of Basham. Buffalo dealt 2019 offensive tackle Cody Ford, who was also a second-round pick, to the Arizona Cardinals in late August of the previous year.

As a part of the crowded defensive line rotation, Basham appeared to have a good chance of making the team. After making a big splash with Von Miller in 2022, the team strengthened its pass-rush unit this summer by adding veteran Leonard Floyd.

Although Basham occasionally shone in camp, he eventually fell short. For the rest of the group, the action demonstrates confidence in AJ Epenesa, a second-round choice in 2020 who is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Meanwhile, according to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, Miller will start the season on the physically unable-to-perform list. He would be sidelined for at least the first four games of the season as a result, giving him time to heal from the ACL injury he sustained last year.
